Bernie Goldberg, A Talking Head With Passion, But Oh So Wrong

July 7, 2011

Talking of the Casey Anthony Trial, I had the misfortune to listen to Bernie Goldberg, one of Fox News’ so-called “talking heads.” Here’s another self-appointed expert on all things legal, or not. He blasted the jury in that case as follows: “look, I mean, I'm so disgusted with this whole thing I can... I can hardly speak straight tonight. But the lawyer condemning, condemning the talking heads, listen, the problem is with the jury. Not so much with the talking heads. The problem is that the jury, as I say, didn't have a modicum of common sense.”

Bernie thinks the woman is guilty of murder; Bill O’Reilly thinks the woman is guilty of murder; Judge Jeanine Pirro thinks she’s guilty of murder, and so do a whole lot more of TV’s talking heads. And, until I heard Jose Baez closing arguments, so did I. Before he finished, however, I had a done a complete turn-about, and here’s why: nobody, and I mean nobody, knows how the poor little soul died. How, then, can you punish someone for murder when it’s not been proven that a murder occurred? Baez did a masterful job of refuting all the prosecution’s so-called evidence.

Bernie, you owe those 12 good men and women, plus at least one alternate, an apology. Bill O’Reilly, you need to open up your mind just a little. Yes, Casey Anthony is an anomaly, and I agree with all you say about the 31 days, the lies and all, but let’s face it, the little girl could have choked on a piece of candy for all we know, or she could have opened the sliding door, climbed the ladder and fallen into the pool and drowned.

Maybe she was murdered. I don’t think we’ll never know. Like it or not, the world of CSI is the one we live in and, for better or worse, we also have to live with it. That being so, what's wrong with the prosecution being forced prove capital murder beyond a reasonable doubt? If it were me in that defendant’s chair, I'd certainly want that; wouldn't you?

Who dumped the body? Again, we’ll probably never know, but if it was an accidental death then whomever was supposed to be watching the child - and who that was we’ll never know either - probably panicked and did something very stupid.

The State of American News Television, Its Personalities and Talking Heads

July 7, 2011

Always a happy and avid TV viewer, I have watched the news channels with interest every single day of my time here in the U.S. At first, it was NBC, then CBS, then ABC and lately I've been taking in all the above plus Fox News and CNN. OH, and BBC World News, of course. And I have to tell you that, at least in this Englishman’s opinion, it aint such a wonderful world, TV news, that is.

Haven't you noticed what's going on? TV news is now more about entertainment than it is current affairs. And the personalities... wow. What a self-satisfied, self-aggrandizing, narcissistic bunch they are. Take Bill O’Reilly for instance. I used to love that guy; watched him religiously for almost as long as the O’Reilly Factor has been on the air. For more than eight years, the man was all he purported to be: open-minded, fair and balanced, but not anymore. Today, he rivals Rush Limbaugh for arrogance and self opinionating, and he's downright closed-minded too. Oh, and did I mention that lately he seems to have acquired a God complex? His opinion of the jurors in the Casey Anthony trail is beyond belief, and it's certainly not acceptable, at least by this Englishman.
